Start Free Motion Quilting!

If you’ve been quilting your projects by stitching in the ditch (don’t we all start out that way?) you might be bored with this repetitious form of quilting. I know how you feel because I started out that way but eventually decided to dip my toes into free motion quilting. I have to admit that my journey was not smooth but I learned that it is a technique worth learning, anyone can master it if they learn the right way and there are a few simple things to do to set yourself up for success.

Learning free motion quilting is just the start of a fantastic quilting journey. Click here if you want to read my blog post “Free Motion Quilting is a Journey That Never Ends” where I talk about what comes after you have made your decision to free motion quilt.

Free Motion Quilting Is Worth Learning

You need to know how to free motion quilt. Free motion quilting is the most creative and satisfying part of the quilting process. You’re missing out on this part of your project if you don’t know how to free motion quilt.

I don’t want to put pressure on you but you really, really need to know how to free motion quilt. Some quilters go through their whole quilting life without learning free motion quilting and they are missing out on a huge part of the quilting journey. You can save money by quilting your own projects. Click here to read my blog post “You Are Wasting Money If You Don’t Do Your Own Quilting” to learn more and download a worksheet that will help you calculate your potential cost savings.

If free motion quilting is to great why doesn’t everyone do it?

Good Question! Most of the reasons why someone does not free motion quilt fall into one of three areas, Fear (of failure), Time (lack of), or Practice (i.e. boredom). So many quilters don’t know how to free motion quilt and have never even tried. What is holding them back from learning this essential technique?

So, what can I do?

The free motion quilting journey starts when you decide you want to break free of “the ditch” and do something more creative. A successful journey starts with making the decision to use free motion quilting in your projects which means finding a way to conquer your fear and also making a commitment to practicing.

Change your approach to free motion quilting and build you confidence in your abilities. The more confident you get, the more creative you (and daring!) you can be with your projects. Click here to read my blog post: “Conquer Your Fear of Free Motion Quilting”.

Free motion quilting is like making music. You learn the basics (scales) and practice the piece (motif) then one day the rhythm takes over and you are making music on your project. You have to actually practice your free motion quilting to develop the “muscle memory” that you use when working on your project. What should I do? - Take Action

The most important action is to learn the free motion quilting technique. I know that sounds obvious but the way you learn and apply this technique will have a big impact on how successful you are and how much you enjoy using it in your projects. You need to learn in ways that build your confidence and “remove the fear” and let you apply what you learned on projects chosen to help you avoid frustration, failure or boredom. You will also need to learn the “nitty-gritty” of the technique including motifs, using the proper tools, and setting up your sewing machine.

Take a course!

Other than having full time access to a in-person tutor, I believe the best way to learn free motion quilting is to take an online course. The benefits of being able to work at your own pace and rewind when necessary are priceless with a technique with as many variations as free motion quilting. Click here to read my blog post “An Online Membership is the Best Way to Learn Free Motion Quilting” for the pros and cons of the different ways of learning.
